Charlotte graduates from Whitney High; she worries about college and her quasi-relationship with Paul.
June 2008
Backstory of Paul; they met in eighth grade orchestra, where they were stand partners. They flirted through eighth grade, but he dropped orchestra in ninth. Charlotte dates a track star named Chris during her sophomore year, but Paul rejoins orchestra junior year. They’re good friends and affectionate, but that summer Paul dates a college freshman named Ashley. They break up shortly, and Paul and Charlotte remain close. They kiss for the first time in early May.
Charlotte’s best friend Allie comes back from her college orientation gushing with excitement. Charlotte flashbacks to her April visit to Bailey, where she met a boy named Jason at a scholarship dinner.
July 2008
Paul cancels his July 4th plans with Charlotte; she watches a celebration from the roof of herhigh school. Charlotte’s future roommate, Audrey, emails her. Paul takes Charlotte to dinner; the hostess, Kayla, knows Paul and Charlotte is briefly upset, but quickly consoled. They discuss their pregnant classmate Leah and Facebook diet advertisements. Charlotte’s mom takes her shopping for college stuff.
August 2008
Jason starts a Scrabulous game with Charlotte, but the application is removed from Facebook. Charlotte flashbacks to the scholarship dinner again. She tries to distract herself by watching the Olympics, and reminisces about seeing the 1996 Olympics. Paul comes over to watch the opening ceremonies, but leaves early and admits he has plans with Ashley. Charlotte dreams of Ashley. Paul and Charlotte make up, and he plans their last day together, which is perfect. Charlotte arrives at Bailey.
September 2008
Charlotte dislikes orientation, rants about the showers, and finally starts classes. She is enthralled with anthropology. Paul calls her often. Charlotte plays in the rain and walks in on Audrey crying. She finds out that Jason is dating her RA, Callie.
October 2008
Charlotte avoids Callie, thinks Audrey may be cheating on her boyfriend, and watches from her window as people walk to the “the less you wear, the less you pay” dance. There is a fire alarm in the middle of the night, and she slips away from the evacuation to wander campus. Leah has her baby. Charlotte sees Callie and Jason from afar in the student center; she’s upset but then Riley, an anthropology friend, stops by and chats. Later, Charlotte, Alice, Jay, and Brittany tear down a “healthy eating” display in the hall that was actually just a collection of diet tips.
November 2008
Obama wins; Charlotte is disheartened by racist and uninformed Facebook statuses, and Paul calls to tell her his roommate got in a fight and his door was vandalized. Callie asks Charlotte to come see her; Callie says she saw them tearing down the hall display, but won’t report them. She asks if Audrey is bulimic. Jason interrupts their conversation. Charlotte also hangs out with Riley and his friends, staying up all night talking. She looks forward to seeing Paul over Thanksgiving break, but when they see each other, he tells her he has been dating a girl named Savannah for a month. Charlotte deletes her Facebook.
December 2008
Charlotte returns to Bailey and sleeps as much as she can. Audrey confesses she had been cheating on Mike; she is officially dating Will now. After an anthropology study group, Riley kisses Charlotte. She runs into Jason before going home; he has heard about it and asks why she hasn’t Facebooked him. He says he’ll call her over Christmas.
